How to Play and Win Online Poker Tournaments

Learn to Play Appropriately at Online Poker Tournaments! We explain how online poker tournaments work and prepare you to play there and win major prizes.

Online poker tournaments are a relatively new phenomenon. The first poker tournament World Series of Poker started in the late 70s. Today there are hundreds of large offline and online poker tournaments and thousands of small ones run in many poker venues daily. Why are poker tournaments so popular? Because people love them. They provide more competitiveness than a single game and give people a chance to win huge prizes paying small amounts of money. Everyone can take part in poker tournaments regardless of sex race and religion and have the same chances to win as all others. Besides, poker tournaments are not only about money. Nothing can be more prestigious for a poker player than winning a major offline or online poker tournament and to be recognized in the world of poker.

Poker tournaments, of course, have the same games with the same rules as single poker games, but the approach of the player must be different. First of all, a tournament player must realize that poker tournaments are not played for money. The chips in the stack represent the chances of winning the event and have nothing to do with the player's finances. He can not add money from his pocket or take it and come back another day. Therefore he must not treat these chips as money, but as something more valuable that can not be recovered when completely lost. You can not say that 5 bucks is small money. 5 bucks can be extremely valuable, especially if you have only 10 left. So, in offline and online poker tournaments it is more important than ever to play rationally and to save chips.

It is also not very important to win a lot of chips at early rounds. All you have to do is to survive these rounds, so playing aggressively is too risky at this stage. Aggressive play has its advantages at the final table, where you must try and kick off as many players as you can as early as you can. Remember that you can not win the tournament in the early rounds, but you can lose it there, so you must do everything you can to get to the final table.

Poker tournaments usually last a lot and you can not stop or delay the game, so you must be prepared for a long play, which means a lot of mental effort and physical strength. Try and avoid playing poker tournaments after sleepless nights or in the bad mood.

Finally, play poker tournaments to win. Olympic principle of participation does not work here. You will never become a poker champ if you do not come to win and to earn money, which actually is the target of online poker.

Chronics of Linda Johnson Celebrity Challenge

This page describes the chronology of Linda Johnson Celebrity Challenge and speaks about tournament poker as a whole.

Many people believe that offline and online poker is a game of five card draw played in dirty clubs by dusty cowboys with at least one cheat amongst them, or a game of middle-aged husbands on Wednesday. Very few actually think of online poker as a highly competitive sport run in tournament format.

Nowadays, online poker enjoys tremendous growth of popularity among all classes, all nations and sexes. Classic cash games are widely played at card rooms of nearly all casinos in the world and in prestigious, luxurious clubs. Online poker sites have extremely high attendance and have become one of the most profitable forms of electronic business. But above all, poker has become a very popular spectacular sport, televised by high rating sportive channels with world wide coverage. Of course, online poker first of all is a money game, and all poker tournaments are played for money, but tournament format seriously increases the challenging factor of the game and turns the game to a very exciting competition, where only the very best win.

One of good examples of tournament poker is the Linda Johnson Celebrity Challenge held at Casino Europa, San Jose, Costa Rica. The idea of the competition was to invite some American poker celebrities to play against the best Costa Rican players. The first four re-buy events of the tournament cost 30,000 colones to participate. Although it may sound much, it is only about 9 US dollars. With such low buy-ins, the tournament had a guaranteed prize pool of at least 10,000 US dollars. The secret of such amazing difference between the prize pool and the buy-in sum is the ability to re-buy chips at any stage of early rounds. Only extremely lucky players can get to higher rounds without re-buying, because other players have a great advantage re-buying their chips.

Even if a player does not run out of chips and can continue playing without re-buying them, he still has an option to take bargain add-ons, once the re-buy period ends, which means purchasing more chips for further rounds, where re-buying is not allowed. Such system, by the way, confused some American players were a bit confused by a huge number of chips for little money (45,000 chips for 9 dollars) and such expansive re-buying scheme, so in the end of the re-buy period some of them did not use the add-on option, believing that they had enough chips to continue, but what happened is that those who did use it got a great advantage over them, purchasing up to 900,000 chips (180 dollars) more.

The first event of the Linda Johnson Celebrity Challenge was won by local Luis Jaikel, who won 6,794 dollars. The second day, Costa Ricardo walked away with 6,088 dollars. On night three, the winner was a transplanted American known as Camisa Bob, who took home 6,394 dollars. The fourth event was won by Cesar Rodriguez, who received 6,196 dollars prize.

The entry to the final event cost 500 dollars and only one re-buy and one add-on was allowed. The three remaining players agreed to split up the prize money evenly keeping only 2,000 dollars in play. They all went all-in, and an American Glen Sito won this extra 2,000, but then it turned out that he did not understand the terms of the deal correctly, and by his demand, the sharing deal was cancelled and the prize money was played between the three players. Glen Sito finished third and, in fact, lost 8,000 dollars because of his decision. Eric Brenes won this extra hand and became the winner of the competition.

The results of the final round of Linda Johnson Celebrity Challenge were:

  1. Erick Brenes: 25,063 dollars
  2. Gustavo Echaverri: 12,889 dollars
  3. Glen Sito: 8,593 dollars
  4. Arturo Mornues: 5,728 dollars
  5. John Streemp: 5,012 dollars
  6. Eli Baiayo: 4,296 dolars
  7. Jorge Chacon: 3,580 dollars
  8. Herman Zango: 2,863 dollars
  9. Pat Armstrong: 2,148 dollars
  10. Huck Seed: 1,432 dollars

A Costa Rican player Natan Wager won by the overall points, winning two second places and only one of the American poker celebrities made two final tables.

DA Angered by False Accusations of Protecting Family

The District Attorney of Outagamie County is being accused of not filing a 2 year old gambling case to allegedly protect family members. To stop these unfounded rumors she has decided to file the case in the next 30 days. She also said she would disclose all information pertaining to the gambling probe when she files the case just to prove she is not trying to hide anything.
