The Harrahs Casino in New Orleans is planning a reopening of its Canal Street Casino in February, close to the 150 year celebration of Mardi Gras. Hoping to start with 1250 employees, it has a payroll of 0.5 million dollar a week. Since Harra Casino might have difficulties in opening the casino on time due to the lack of employees caused by Hurricane Katrina, a plan approved by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board set to help work out the reopening.
New Orleans is set to be a favored tourist destination for next years Mardi Gras festival by tourism leaders. Harrahs, having the experience of attracting tourists before the hurricanes, can help the rehabilitation of the business during the festival.
In order to get enough employees to Harrahs casino and open it on time, the state agreed to make some changes in the employment rules. After most of New Orleans Casino workers got laid off due to the irrelevancy of the 2001 tax rules during the storms, the attorney generals office made some changes in the employee and payroll requirements. The agreement between the state and Harrahs said that Harrahs continues in paying the state the minimum daily tax payment, until it achieves back its pre Hurricane profits.
Harrah s New Orleans Casino plans to reopen in February just before Mardi Gras with about half of the employees it had before Hurricane Katrina under a plan unanimously approved by the Louisiana Gaming Control Board Tuesday. The Canal Street casino hopes to open the entire property "on or about Feb. 17" with 1,250 employees and a minimum biweekly payroll of $1 million, and will continue ramping up with increasing requirements for pay and workers as its revenues increase.
