Another police officer in Honolulu has admitted to being guilty of providing protection to an illegal cockfighting operation in Waialua.
The officer, 31 years old pleaded guilty yesterday to providing the operators of the illegal cockfighting den with information about upcoming police raids. The officer also admitted to taking part in gambling on the fights during the 2004 and 2005 cockfighting season.
The man, an officer on the police force for 8 years, admitted to conspiring to obstruct the enforcement of criminal laws. The maximum punishment for this charge could be up to 5 years in jail, but the federal advisory sentencing guidelines call for a lesser prison term.
Until his sentencing on May 29th the officer is out of jail on bail.
The first officer to plead guilty to these charges was found guilty last year and is still awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for this year.
So far 2 of the 3 officers originally charged with being involved with cockfighting, cards and dice games that were being help across the street from the Waialua Elementary School. The gambling ring and the officers were taken down after a large FBI wiretap operation into gambling, drug and other illegal activities.
The third officer charged is still awaiting trial.
