Tacoma Washington Non profit organizations are trying to get a law passed making them exempt from paying taxes on money raised from gambling events.
Many citizens including several members from the Tacoma City Counsel agree and a first reading of a bill the council is hoping to get passed at their next meeting on January 9th was just read last week.
In 2005 non profit groups in the Tacoma area had to pay $78,000 dollars in taxes on money they raised using charity gambling nights , and from video gambling machines around the town that also are used to raise money for the charities work.
Several of the council members feel this money would be put to use by the different groups and that is why they decided to write the bill that will exempt non profit groups from paying a gambling tax on money the group raises.
Members of organizations like the elks and the
VFW were very happy to hear that after years of protesting their prayers have finally been answered.
With the money they save on the tax break they will be able to help more veterans who have fallen thru the cracks in the system and help them receive the medical help or counseling they need.
